Storied F-14 Tomcat ends combat role in the Navy

There will be no more dogfights for the Tomcat. The U.S. Navy's last Top Gun planes came home yesterday, ending the final combat deployment of the sleek, Cold War-era F-14 fighter jet that is being retired. All 22 Tomcats of Fighter Squadrons VF-213 and VF-31 arrived in style.

They flew together in a giant wedge formation over Oceana Naval Air Station as hundreds of family, friends and sailors cheered. The crowd then welcomed the fighter pilots on the tarmac after they landed.

"Any homecoming is a big deal when you've been away from your family for so long, but this is the last Tomcat cruise," said Lt. Jon Jeck, 32, as he held his 3-year-old son Collin.

"We're putting the premier fighter to sleep. It's a staple of Americana," Jeck said. They had been aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, which will return today to nearby Norfolk Naval Station after a six-month deployment.

The F-14 squadrons are part of Carrier Air Wing Eight, which flew 10,000 sorties during the deployment. The air wing suffered no losses as it logged more than 30,000 flight hours, including 3,300 hours delivering 52 bombs and air-to-ground missiles to support coalition forces on the ground in Iraq.

The "Black Lions" of VF-213 will begin the transition to the F/A-18F Super Hornet immediately. The "Tomcatters" of VF-31 will continue flying F-14s until September, then begin the switch in October.

"If you want to think about airplanes that have defined the air age, this would have to be on the short list," military analyst John Pike said of the F-14, the two-seat fighter with signature retractable wings glamorized in the 1986 Tom Cruise movie Top Gun.

The F-14 entered service in the early '70s and was intended to defend U.S. aircraft carriers from Soviet bombers carrying long-range cruise missiles, said Pike, the director of GlobalSecurity.org, an Alexandria research center on security issues.

But "today, you're much less worried about maritime patrol aircraft coming after you and a lot more worried about dropping bombs on the bad guys," Pike said.

DA geht sie dahin eine der Inkonen der mil. Luftfahrt - Tom Cruise ohne F 14 in Top gun - wäre nur der halbe Filme gewesen - habe in so 10 x gesehen + nat. die LP damals gleich gekauft

Ouuuuuuu ja ... mein Favorit ist 'Playing with some boys' *Seufz* Was solls - die SuperHornet und in absehbarer Zeit die JSF sind würdige Nachfolger.

Du siehst Patrick wir haben den gleichen Musikgeschmack - die Original.- LP gibts noch - nur keinen Plattenspieler mehr in meinen Haushalt - aber wozu gibts da das Internet...

Interessantes Detail an der genialen Filmmusik: bei den besten "Scheiben" haben (halb-)Österreicher die Finger im Spiel. Kenny Loggins (Playin With The Boys) wurde vom Österreicher Peter Wolff arrangiert, der auch das Lied schrieb. Den kompletten Soundtrack arrangierte die in München und Wien lebende Harold Faltermeyer, den man zB von den neuen Fendrich-Alben kennt. Das "Top Gun Anthem" stammt aus seiner Feder, bei "Take My Breath Away" arrangierte er zusammen mit dem Südtiroler Hansjörg Moroder. Faltermeyer erhielt für "seine" beiden Songs einen Oscar und einen Grammy.

Daran magst Du lieber Patrick , den Altersunterschied erkennen, meine Wenigkeit ist Bj. 1960 und da gabs damals noch nicht leistbar CD-Spieler . als der Film ins Kino kam..

Hab mir damals die LP gekauft - um sie auf meinen HIfi- Turm - die Dinger waren ja damals noch wirklicher TOWER - abzuspielen
