reuters.com wrote:PARIS (Reuters) - Europe must be prepared to curb subsidies for Airbus if a trade row with U.S. rival Boeing is settled, European Union Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson said in a newspaper interview published on Saturday.
The U.S. government says Airbus has received billions of euros in unfair subsidies, while the European Union has made a similar accusation concerning U.S. aid for Boeing.
The World Trade Organisation (WTO) is examining the dispute and the International Herald Tribune quoted Mandelson as saying its verdict could disappoint both parties.
"I think that any outcome from the WTO will be less clear cut than some imagine," Mandelson said.
Mandelson also said it might be possible to reopen talks.
"If it's possible to restart negotiations, I'm prepared to do so," he said.
If talks do restart, "then European government funding will have to adapt to the outcome of those negotiations," he added, referring to the millions in development loans provided to Airbus, which the U.S. government says should be cut off.
